A man with a shaved head and beard stands in a doorway, wearing a black leather jacket, blue jeans, and white sneakers, with his hands in his pockets and a black strap across his chest.

With years of industry experience in design agencies, in-house, and as a self-employed freelancer, I offer end-to-end expertise in managing creative graphic design projects, from concept to implementation. For the majority of my career I’ve been in-house, visualising brands, campaigns and strategies for internal and external stakeholders.

I am a motivated self-starter, proficient in Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft 365. My skills include creating and managing brands, editorial design (handling substantial copy for reports and magazines), print design, digital assets for websites, emails, and social media, web design and CMS, filming, and video editing, along with some experience in animation. I also undertake copywriting, editing, and proofreading. I can manage and order print materials, and I am skilled in pitching, presenting, and training. As a personable and warm mentor, I also have experience training and line-managing other designers.

Current role (2020 - present): Senior Graphic Designer at GreenSquareAccord (GSA)

GSA is a housing association established in 2021 following a merger of GreenSquare Group and Accord Housing Association. Having previously served as Accord’s lead creative for four years, I was invited back to the company pre-merger to roll out, manage and develop the new GSA brand. My achievements include:

  • Transformed a complex corporate strategy and business plan into an engaging and accessible visual narrative for colleagues and stakeholders, aligning them with the new corporate vision. My design work won Gold in the Best Business Change category at Communicate Magazine’s 2024 Internal Comms & Engagement (ICE) Awards. View work >

  • When GSA consolidated its legacy offices and moved into a new head office, I designed a project identity and accompanying campaign that unified a transitioning workforce. My work reinforced GSA’s brand value of ‘business-minded for social purpose’ and directly supported a smooth transition, allowing colleagues to ‘hit the ground running’ on moving day. View work >

  • Created an immersive training tool to bridge the empathy gap between colleagues and the lived reality of complex tenant issues, specifically damp and mould. The Trials of Mrs Tranter - a ‘murder-mystery’ style evidence game - has been ‘played’ by over 500 colleagues to date. 94% report a clearer understanding of their role in tenant complaints. It has contributed to a 43% reduction in customer complaints. The project’s success has established GSA as a leader in innovative employee engagement. View work >

“Jim has been at the heart of a transformation of our visual language and design output. His high-quality, vibrant design, his can-do attitude and his friendly approach are all sources of high praise among his colleagues.” — 'Outstanding Contribution' prize nomination, GSA staff awards

Previous role (2017 - 2020): Graphic Designer at AECOM

AECOM is an American multinational infrastructure consulting firm headquartered in Dallas, Texas. I joined their UK Major Pursuits Team in 2017 as a bid designer. Tasked with elevating their competitive edge in the global infrastructure market, I led the design of high-stakes, multi-billion-pound bids, mostly for transport and water projects. I transformed complex technical data into visually intuitive narratives that resonated with clients in various regions and industries. I ensured that dense engineering content remained both accessible and highly persuasive by consulting closely with bid writers and engineering experts within the bid team.

My creative work on AECOM’s bids provided a significant commercial advantage, differentiating the firm from competitors and instilling immediate confidence in potential clients. Ultimately, my designed submissions streamlined the decision-making process for evaluators and played a critical role in securing major global contract wins, helping them maintain a win-rate of 60-80%.
